This distinctive Hermle mantel clock dates from the 1960s. Its wide, rectangular wooden case, with splayed legs, fine horizontal decorative strips and elegantly curved brass details, is a characteristic example of mid-century design.

Particularly striking is the prominent, rounded dial projecting from the front of the case, with its cream-coloured chapter ring, gold-toned hands and softly rose-coloured centre. The combination of dark wood, light decorative strips and polished metal accents recalls the furniture and interior design of the 1950s and 1960s.

Measuring 29.5 cm wide and 20 cm high, the clock has a distinctive presence. It combines the design of the post-war modernist era with traditional German clockmaking and a mechanical striking mechanism.

Origin and Historical Context

This mantel clock was manufactured in the 1960s by Franz Hermle & Sohn, a German clock manufacturer based in Reichenbach am Heuberg, Baden-Württemberg, known for its mechanical clock movements.

The clock's design reflects the post-war modernist period. During the 1950s and 1960s, new approaches to furniture and interior accessories emerged. Clean geometric lines, splayed legs, warm wood tones and metallic accents characterised many designs of the period.

These features are also evident in this Hermle mantel clock. Its wide case, fine horizontal decorative strips and distinctive dial reflect the design language of the mid-century era.

Movement and Technical Details

The clock retains its original Hermle calibre 130-020 mechanical 8-day movement, featuring a floating balance escapement and a striking mechanism for the hours and half-hours.

The floating balance escapement allows the clock to operate without a conventional pendulum. Timekeeping is regulated by the oscillating mechanism incorporated into the movement.

Two separate mainspring barrels provide power for the timekeeping and striking mechanisms. The clock is wound using a winding key and has a running duration of approximately eight days.

The striking mechanism sounds on a three-rod gong. On the hour, the clock strikes the corresponding number of hours; on the half-hour, it strikes once.

The mechanical movement was completely dismantled in our workshop, thoroughly cleaned, professionally reassembled, lubricated and adjusted. Following this work, the clock is once again running very well and keeping accurate time.

This mantel clock can now do what it was made to do more than 60 years ago: reliably tell the time and mark the passing hours with its striking mechanism. Its history has been preserved, ready to continue in a new home.

Case, Dial and Design

The dark brown wooden case has a wide, rectangular shape and stands on four splayed wooden legs with brass-toned tips.

Fine, light-coloured decorative strips run horizontally across the front, emphasising the elongated proportions of the case. Curved brass details complement its geometric design.

At the centre is the prominent, rounded dial housing, projecting forward from the case. The cream-coloured chapter ring, gold-toned hands and soft rose-coloured centre create a distinctive combination.

The interplay of wood, metal and understated colours gives the clock its individual character.

Its unusual case design makes it particularly suitable for display on a sideboard, console table, chest of drawers or another surface where its characteristic form can be appreciated.

Condition and Restoration

The clock has been carefully restored in our workshop and prepared for continued use.

The original mechanical movement was completely dismantled. Its components were cleaned and inspected before being professionally reassembled, lubricated and adjusted.

Photographs of the dismantled movement document this work and provide an insight into its mechanical construction.

The polished wooden case, with its fine decorative strips, remains in attractive vintage condition.

There is a dull patch in the finish on the upper left side of the wooden case. A darkened area is also visible on the dial above the left winding hole. Both signs of wear have been left as found and are documented in the photographs.

Other signs of age and use may be present.

The clock is fully functional and, following servicing, is running very well and keeping accurate time.

The photographs form part of the description.

Operation

The mechanical movement is wound using a winding key. When fully wound, the mainsprings provide a running duration of approximately eight days.

The striking mechanism marks the full hour with the corresponding number of strikes and the half-hour with a single strike on the gong.

Written instructions for winding, setting and regulating the clock are included.

You can watch the clock in operation and listen to its striking mechanism in our video.
