This Junghans kitchen clock from the 1960s combines two functions that naturally belonged together at the time: an easy-to-read wall clock for keeping track of the time and a mechanical timer for cooking and baking.

The glazed ceramic case in warm yellow and cream white is characteristic of kitchen design from this period. During the 1950s and 1960s, coloured glazed ceramics found their way into many kitchens – from storage and spice jars to coffee filters, tableware and kitchen clocks. Colour and design increasingly became part of everyday household objects.

Gebrüder Junghans of Schramberg in Germany’s Black Forest was one of the most important German clock manufacturers of the 20th century. Alongside wristwatches, table clocks and alarm clocks, the company also produced wall and kitchen clocks for everyday use. Kitchen clocks with an integrated timer were a particular speciality: as early as 1959, Junghans advertised that it had been the first clock manufacturer to create kitchen clocks with a built-in timer. Combining a wall clock with a separately adjustable timer was specifically designed to meet the practical needs of the kitchen.

Movement and Technology

After many decades, the original clock movement could no longer be restored to reliable working order, so we replaced it with a new quartz movement.

The clock is now fitted with a UTS quartz movement made in Germany by Uhrentechnik Schwarzwald in Dunningen. This gives the historic clock a reliable movement suitable for continued everyday use.

The original mechanical timer, however, has been retained. We completely dismantled, cleaned and freshly lubricated it. It operates independently of the quartz movement and signals the end of the selected time with its mechanical bell.

Two generations of clock technology therefore come together in this clock: a modern German quartz movement provides the timekeeping, while the original timer continues to operate entirely mechanically.

Case, Dial and Design

The glazed ceramic case combines a warm yellow with cream white. Its gently rounded shape, tapering towards the bottom, and restrained colour scheme give the clock its distinctive appearance.

The light-coloured dial features dark Arabic numerals, a surrounding minute track and the Junghans name. The dark hands provide a clear contrast and make the time easy to read.

A narrow metal bezel and the clock glass enclose the dial at the front.

Below the clock is the original mechanical timer with its own minute scale and setting knob. It remains fully functional.

The lettering on the timer knob shows clear signs of age and use. Parts of the lettering have faded or worn away over the decades. We have deliberately left these traces of use as they are.

Condition and Restoration

The clock has been carefully cleaned and prepared by us for continued use.

The glazed ceramic case is exceptionally well preserved. It is completely intact, with no cracks or chips.

The clock glass shows age- and use-related scratches.

We replaced the original clock movement with a new German-made UTS quartz movement. The original mechanical timer was completely dismantled, cleaned and freshly lubricated and operates reliably.

The photographs form part of the description.

Operation

The quartz movement is battery-operated. Once the battery has been inserted and the time set, the clock is ready for use.

The mechanical timer operates independently of the quartz movement. The required time is selected using the lower setting knob. When the selected time has elapsed, the mechanical bell sounds.
