This 1960s Junghans mantel clock combines a richly grained wooden case with a clearly arranged dial. The round dial, with its light-colored chapter ring and gold-tone hands, is set into a long, deep-brown case. Slim decorative lines and slightly splayed feet give the clock its distinctive mid-century look.

Its broad, low silhouette will look lovely on a sideboard or mantel. A small crocheted doily, a framed family photograph or a single piece of pottery can create a personal vignette while letting the clock remain the focus.

Origin and period

The clock dates from the 1960s and was made by Junghans in Schramberg in Germany’s Black Forest. Its clean lines and warm wood tones reflect the home and design style of the period.

Movement and mechanism

Inside is the mechanical Junghans W 274/210 movement. The Bim-Bam striking mechanism sounds on three chime rods. A membrane amplifies their vibrations, giving the chime a particularly full, resonant tone.

The chime sounds once on the half hour and strikes the number of hours on the hour. A lever on the back, to the left of the door, switches the chime on or off.

Case, dial and design

The long wooden case frames the centrally positioned round dial. The light-colored chapter ring with Arabic numerals contrasts with the darker wooden centre; the gold-tone hands and fine decorative trim echo the lines of the case. The chapter ring shows slight variations in color.

Condition and restoration

The movement has been fully dismantled, cleaned and serviced, professionally oiled, adjusted and tested. The clock runs very well and keeps accurate time. It is in very good condition. Age-related and use-related marks may be present; the photographs show the condition of the actual clock and form part of the description.

Operation and chime

You can watch the clock in operation and hear the full sound of its Bim-Bam chime in our video.
