AntiguoShop did not really begin as a shop at all. It began with collecting clocks.
At first, we collected electric torsion pendulum clocks. Their technology and the gentle movement of the pendulum had made us curious. Eventually, we began to wonder whether we might also try our hand at a mechanical clock.
We found the answer at a flea market. There we discovered a mechanical Herr anniversary clock from the 1950s. We took it home – and then the learning began. With specialist literature, a great deal of patience, and the determination to understand how the clock worked, we eventually succeeded in bringing it back to life and making it keep time once again.
That Herr anniversary clock was, in many ways, the beginning of everything. We still own it today, and it continues to run reliably.
One clock led to another. At first, other anniversary clocks joined the collection, followed later by mantel clocks. With every clock there was something new to discover: different movements, different designs, and technical solutions that continually sparked our curiosity.
Then, quite by chance, a Junghans electromagnetic pendulum clock came to us. It marked the beginning of a new fascination. We still have that clock today as well. We began looking around, discovered Kundo electromagnetic pendulum clocks, and found ourselves fascinated all over again.
And then came the Bulle clocks.
Thomas was captivated almost immediately. These French electromagnetic pendulum clocks, with their unusual technology, became his favourite clocks – and they still are today.
Lenka's collection, on the other hand, developed in a very different direction. She has a particular fondness for clocks featuring globes. These include a Kundo world-time clock, a replica of The Royal Geographical Society World Clock, both versions of the Kaiser anniversary clocks with a globe as the pendulum, and various other clocks in which a globe forms part of the design.
Over the years, our collection grew – and with it our experience of working with historical clocks and their different technical systems. Eventually, there were more clocks than we could keep ourselves. And that is how AntiguoShop finally came into being.
What began with curiosity and a passion for collecting has long since become an integral part of our lives. Today, we restore historical clocks drawing on the experience we have gained over many years, and with the same respect for their mechanics and history that was there at the very beginning.
And some clocks we simply cannot bring ourselves to part with.
