Mid-Century Mantel Clock with Curved Wooden Case and Silent Quartz Movement, 1960s
Before shipping, every clock is carefully checked once more and gently prepared for its next journey.
This elegant mantel clock dates from the 1960s. Its wide, gently curved wooden case, with a centrally positioned circular clock housing, is a fine example of the restrained yet expressive design language of the period. The warm wood finish, gold-coloured dial surround and distinctive numerals give the clock its unmistakable character.
Measuring 40 cm (15.7 inches) in width, the clock has a striking presence without appearing bulky, thanks to its modest height of just 17 cm (6.7 inches). It makes an attractive mantel or table clock, combining the design of a bygone era with reliable, silent timekeeping.
Origin and Historical Background
The wide, curved wooden case, centrally positioned circular clock housing and dial design bear similarities to table clocks produced in the former East Germany (GDR). Certain models made by VEB Uhrenwerk Weimar display comparable design features.
An East German origin is therefore possible. Clocks manufactured in the GDR were also produced for export and sold through West German mail-order companies such as Quelle and Neckermann, sometimes under their own brand names.
The original mechanical movement is marked only "Made in Germany". As there is no identifiable manufacturer's mark and an identical model has not yet been found in historical catalogues, the clock's precise origin remains uncertain. Although manufacture in the GDR, possibly by VEB Uhrenwerk Weimar, is conceivable, a West German manufacturer cannot be ruled out.
Movement and Technology
Unfortunately, the original mechanical movement was beyond repair. To allow this beautiful clock to continue giving pleasure for many years to come, it has been carefully converted to a modern, silent quartz movement by UTS – Uhrentechnik Schwarzwald.
This high-quality German-made movement provides accurate, reliable and completely silent timekeeping. It operates without an audible ticking sound.
This makes the clock suitable not only for living and dining rooms, but also for bedrooms, studies and other spaces where quiet surroundings are particularly appreciated.
The battery-powered movement is easy to use and requires no regular winding. The clock has no striking mechanism.
The clock can now once again fulfil the purpose for which it was created more than 60 years ago: reliably telling the time and finding its place in everyday life. Its history has been preserved – and can continue in a new home.
Case, Dial and Design
The wide wooden case has a gently curved profile that extends outwards on either side of the central clock housing. Its dark brown finish and understated design give the clock its distinctive appearance.
The circular clock housing is set into the centre of the case. Its cylindrical shape provides a striking contrast to the soft curves of the wood.
The dial is framed by a gold-coloured surround. The stylised numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock reflect the design of the 1960s.
With its low profile and relatively generous width, the clock is particularly well suited to sideboards, chests of drawers and other surfaces where its flowing shape can be appreciated.
Condition and Restoration
The clock has been carefully cleaned and refurbished in our workshop for continued use.
The original wooden case and distinctive dial have been preserved.
The case shows signs of age and use. There are several pressure marks in the finish, particularly on the right-hand side, which are also visible in the photographs. These marks are part of the clock's history and were deliberately not completely removed during refurbishment.
The original mechanical movement could not be repaired and has been replaced with a new, silent UTS quartz movement manufactured in Germany.
The clock is fully functional.
The photographs form part of the description.
Operation
The quartz movement is powered by one AA battery. Simply insert the battery and set the time to start the clock.
The silent movement operates without audible ticking. Regular winding is not required.
