This mantel clock by the Wilhelm Haid clock factory in Pfullingen combines a softly curved case with the warm appearance of its honey-coloured wooden front. The dark, glossy sides create a striking contrast. Its shape recalls mantel clocks known as “Napoleon hat” clocks.

The light-coloured chapter ring frames the central dial. Together with the splayed feet, it gives the clock a distinctive presence that works well on a sideboard, chest of drawers or shelf.

Origin and date

The clock was made in the 1960s by the Wilhelm Haid clock factory in Pfullingen, near Reutlingen. It is dated to 1962. The mechanical movement was made by Franz Hermle & Sohn in Reichenbach am Heuberg.

The design belongs to the Mid-Century period. Its softly rounded case shape recalls mantel clocks known as “Napoleon hat” clocks.

Movement and mechanism

Inside is the original mechanical 8-day Hermle movement, calibre 130-020, with a floating balance and half-hour and hour striking.

The floating-balance movement operates without a conventional pendulum. The balance assembly integrated into the movement regulates the timekeeping.

Two separate mainspring barrels power the time train and the striking train. The clock is wound with a key and has a running time of approximately eight days.

The clock strikes on a gong with three rods. At each full hour, it strikes the corresponding number of times; at the half hour, it strikes once.

In our workshop, we fully dismantled the mechanical movement, cleaned it, reassembled it, properly lubricated it and adjusted it. Since the overhaul, the clock has been running very well and keeping time accurately.

This mantel clock can once again do what it was made to do more than 60 years ago: keep time reliably and mark the hours with its striking mechanism. Its story continues in a new home.

Case, dial and design

The case has a softly rounded wooden front and dark, glossy sides. It tapers towards the bottom and stands on splayed feet.

The round dial is framed by a light-coloured chapter ring with dark hour markers. The two winding holes are set into the wood-coloured centre section of the dial. The warm colour of the wood contrasts with the dark sides and the light dial.

Its compact size makes the clock well suited to sideboards, dressers, chests of drawers and shelves.

Condition and restoration

We carefully restored the clock and prepared it for continued use.

The original mechanical movement was fully dismantled. All components were cleaned and inspected, then properly reassembled, lubricated and adjusted.

The photographs of the dismantled movement document this work and offer a glimpse of its mechanical construction.

There are light scratches on the top of the case. A very fine hairline crack is present in the lacquer on the front. Both signs of use have been left as found and are shown in the photographs.

Further age- and use-related marks may be present.

The clock is fully functional and, following the overhaul, is running very well and keeping time accurately. It is supplied with a warranty.

The photographs form part of the description.

Operation

The mechanical movement is wound with a key. When both mainspring barrels are fully wound, the clock runs for approximately eight days.

The clock strikes the corresponding number of times on the hour and once on the half hour.

A written guide to winding, setting and regulating the clock is included.

You can watch the clock in operation and listen to its strike in our video.
